This Land

Each day I listen to you and wonder
How easily your humanity is cast asunder
As you claim that we get only what we deserve
With thousands lying dormant and in reserve.

Each day I look at you and am amazed
How you can remain so completely unfazed
By the poverty and suffering beyond the electric fence
That helps you to feel less tense.

Each day I think of what goes through your mind
And ask myself whether you’re really so blind
I try to fathom the depths of your uncaring heart
Only to realize that you exist in a world apart.

Each day I pass by you on the street
Disdainfully looking at me from head to feet
With a look on your face that’s full of suspicion
And the fear in your soul makes me question.

What is it that you perceive
Do you look forward to death’s reprieve
Will your children be able to love mine
After being exposed to your prejudice for all this time.

Each day I defeat your ignorance
As I strive to understand
The nature of your callous arrogance
That has shaped this beautiful land.
